Podcast Recommendation: Ghost Church

Ghost Church is a nine-part complete (for now) series that follows the host's journey to a spiritualism camp in Cassadaga, Florida while telling the story of American spiritualism from its origins through today. Both the producer, Sofi Lichterman, and the host, Jamie Loftus, are amazing podcast creators. This is a great introduction to both of them if you're not already familiar, and I will certainly be writing about more of their work in the future.

Ghost Church blends live recordings from Jamie's trip (including gas station dinners and readings with local mediums) with narration from present-day Jamie as she reflects back and adds context to the story. They weave in the tumultuous history of the Spiritualist movement with thoughtful interviews and great conversations with Uncle Dennis. Ghost Church gives a view of the big picture, both historically and currently, without demonizing or lionizing the individuals in it.

Jamie's attitude toward the subject matter is what, in my opinion, makes this show really special. She is skeptical but respectful and open, calling things out without casting aspersions. She talks to the people she interviews and the audience like she is talking to a friend.

Ghost Church is well-made, considerate, smart, and very funny. To top it off, they have fun with the editing, and the style shows a lot of personality that adds to the storytelling.

You can find it wherever you listen to podcasts.
